STORY: Set in a small town in North India, this series is centered around the middle-class Mishra family and their day-to-day struggles.
REVIEW: Early on in the show, a clay piggy bank, that is the narrator (voiceover by Shivankit Singh Parihar) of the story explains – “Gullak is not a story but a series of anecdotes.” True to its word, the series unfolds through varying events in the life of the Mishras. There’s the adoring and sarcastic mother Shanti (Geetanjali Kulkarni) who rarely speaks without yelling. Her endearing and forgiving husband Santosh (Jameel Khan) who works at the local electricity division. Their elder son Annu (Vaibhav Raj Gupta), who is worried about the family's future, is preparing for Staff Selection Commission (SSC) exams and his happy-go-lucky younger brother Aman (Harsh Mayar) is his partner-in-crime.
Directed by Amrit Raj Gupta, ‘Gullak’ (A piggy bank of memories) is an endearing five-episode web series brought to you by TVF. The show is relatable and through its simple narrative, it proves that this is the story of any middle-class Indian family. With no life-changing events, the Mishras wrestle with noisy washing machines, battles between the kins, complaints about the food (for instance, Shanti cooks ‘Tehri’ for lunch, however, all family members call it a ‘disappointing yellow aloo chawal’) and neighbourhood aunties (especially Bittu’s mom played by Sunita Rajwar).
Thanks to Nikhil Vijay Motghare’s simple writing, the series’ humour isn’t laugh-out-loud. However, it does manage to maintain a pleasing tone overall. The dialogues and the backdrop keep on reminding the viewers that it’s about the ordinary life of average people. Also, the background score by Anurag Saikia goes well with the narrative and the title track is hummable, too.
Additionally, this drama is laced with pitch-perfect performances by talented Jameel Khan and a fantastic Geetanjali Kulkarni, who wrongly pronounced few words with utmost ease—like invertor as inbertor. Her dialogue delivery and expressions are outstanding. The lively Vaibhav Raj Gupta and Harsh Mayar are like any other siblings – they can't stand each other and scan't live without one another as well. It is nice to be around these four characters and see them bond and battle together.
Overall, this family drama isn’t a laugh riot, but it will definitely crack you up and make you smile.
