Paatal Lok (transl. Underworld) is an Indian Hindi-language crime thriller web television series on Amazon Prime Video, created by Sudip Sharma, who wrote the script along side Sagar Haveli, Hardik Mehta and Gunjit Chopra, and directed by Avinash Arun and Prosit Roy. The series was produced by Anushka Sharma, under the banner fresh start Filmz, and stars Jaideep Ahlawat, Gul Panag, Neeraj Kabi, Swastika Mukherjee, Ishwak Singh, and Abhishek Banerjee. Loosely supported Tarun Tejpal's 2010 novel The Story of My Assassins, the series is a few disillusioned cop who lands the case of an assassination attempt gone wrong

Sudip Sharma wrote the script on January 2017, and took quite a year for writing and pre-production. it's filmed across quite 110 real locations, with Paatal Lok being the primary web series to be shot at Chitrakoot.The cinematography for the series were handled by Avinash Arun and Saurabh Goswami, with editing done by Sanyukta Kaza. The background score was jointly composed by Naren Chandravarkar and Benedict Taylor. The series marked the debut of unpolluted Slate Filmz (a production house led by Anushka Sharma) in production of television series for digital medium.

Paatal Lok was premiered on Amazon Prime Video on 15 May 2020. The series eventually received rave reviews from critics, praising the performances of the protagonist Jaideep Ahlawat, and other lead characters, storyline, writing and direction. The series were listed within the Top 10 Indian Web Series of 2020, by The Indian Express. Variety magazine listed Paatal Lok together of the simplest international TV shows of 2020.

Four suspects are apprehended for a conspiracy to murder. Their target is Sanjeev Mehra (Neeraj Kabi), a reputed news anchor at a Delhi channel. At the Outer Jamuna Paar police outpost, much to the chagrin of his senior officer, Hathi Ram Chaudhary (Jaideep Ahlawat), a pot-bellied policeman with poor prospects, is assigned the status case.

Over nine episodes, the story unfolds at two levels – the elite upper-middle-class Delhi world of the news anchor whose dual lives comprise of an anxiety-ridden, dog-loving wife Dolly (Swastika Mukherjee) reception and therefore the power-play of a newsroom. The more graded and immersive storyline is from Hathi Ram’s perspective. Ahlawat acutely captures Hathi Ram’s frustrations as he sees a chance slipping away. The juxtaposition together with his home life, where he returns to a supportive and sorted wife (Gul Panag) and a rebellious teenager, round off Hathi Ram’s character to form him relatable and human, unlike Sanjeev Mehra’s pomposity.
